Doug, Twitter and all social media is very simple...as long as your motives truly are social, you will do well! We all know what our actual motivations are, and that's what comes to the surface through our marketing activities. A fantastic fellow blogger Michael Martine has taught me that blogging is both social AND introspective, and it actually forces you to work on yourself as a person as well as a business owner. Doesn't this stuff rock? It's a lot of fun too!

I love the analogy of not going into the party and socializing, but going around putting fliers on everyone's windshields. That is spot on!

We are very new to Twitter ourselves and are try to work it into our business model slowly and professionally.

Thanks Walter :) Yes, the fact is that Twitter can be a massively effective business tool, but like any great tool you can also do more damage than good. As long as your focus is on people, not just selling your crap, you're on the right track and will get great results.

Nice and simple advice. You've got to approach people not like a business prospect but a person whom you can become friends with. It's sometimes annoying when someone approach you with their business like an automaton. :-)

Right on Vic...good point. The people you follow, the specific content you choose to link up...it all adds up to the professionalism (or lack thereof) of your profile. You rock :)

Twitter is there for us to benefit for fun, for marketing, and for following nice people. To do it professionally, we design our page professionally, tweet professionally, follow professional people, link our professional blog and so on.
