At the moment I'm just trying to understand my current readers with my email list. At first I was too afraid to even send out emails because I've signed up to a lot email lists and a lot of them just repeatedly sell.

I think a good balance of selling related emails and valuable non-sales (not obviously selling something in front of your eyes) is good.

I'm actually encouraging people write back to me in my emails at the moment. It probably helps that my email list is rather small at the moment so I may not be able to do this so easily in future unless I get a bit of help ;-)

Right on Todd. You gotta ask for the order! but don't think of it as bold...you've already done the bold part...putting your work up for everyone to see! If people say they like it and give you positive feedback, it's perfectly reasonable and natural to engage them in conversation from there, and that will often lead to a sale at some point. Your blog is like having a gallery showing 24/7/365...you're doing it right!

Nice post, Chris. I fall into that camp sometimes... thinking it's rude to sell. I have a very well received newsletter where I show people my new work, with links to new products. People love it, though it's still not a big revenue generator for me. I'm getting bolder, though... and am less scared to ask for the sale. :)
